The bulk of my work consists of individual sessions and workshops at Dr. Smith and Associates, where I specialize in helping people make personal change that has a positive impact on their health. For example, I frequently work with people who want to comfortably lose weight, reduce and manage stress, prepare for medical procedures, quit smoking, manage a self-limiting fear, increase motivation for exercise, and eliminate compulsions.

I also offer Workplace Wellness Programs. To discuss weight loss, smoking cessation, and stress management programs for your Massachusetts or Southern New Hampshire workplace, drop me an email or give our office a call at (978) 874-1180!

FAQs: Hypnosis with Kathryn Maxham, BCH

What are your areas of specialty?

The terms are pretty much interchangeable. For some reason unknown to me, "hypnotherapy" and "hypnotherapist" seem to be the favored terminology on the West Coast, while "hypnosis" and "hypnotist" are predominantly used on the East Coast.

What's the difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy?

Most people can be hypnotized quite easily if they approach it with an attitude of sincerity and are willing to participate in the process. (You can always analyze it later.) It is important, however, that you feel comfortable with the person with whom you're working.

During our first session, we'll spend time discussing the goal you want to achieve or problem you want to resolve, how the process will work, and what you can expect to experience. Then, if you feel comfortable and want to proceed, we'll conduct a hypnosis session.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

The number of sessions needed varies, depending on the issue and your particular situation. For general planning purposes, I recommend that you expect 4-8 sessions. Keep in mind that this is something we'll discuss during the first session and can modify as we go along.

How many sessions will I need?

Probably not. To find out for sure, call your insurance company and ask (the number should be on your insurance card). If they do cover your work with me, I'll provide you with the paperwork you need to submit to them to get reimbursed.

Will insurance cover my sessions with you?

Hypnosis and biofeedback training can be extremely beneficial to people who are managing drug and alcohol addiction, and they are a wonderful complement to other programs, including 12-Step Programs and therapy.

I want to be sure you understand, though, that I am not a mental health therapist, nor am I an addictions counselor.

Do you work with drug and alcohol addiction?

I implemented this policy because of the high incidence of no-show rates for people who had booked appointments for smoking cessation. It turns out that it's a good barometer of one's commitment to quitting as well!

Why do you require pre-payment for smoking cessation?

I can provide you with a complimentary cassette tape recording of your session if you'd like, though I realize this technology is pretty out-dated.

If you'd like to bring a digital recorder with you, I'd be happy to record your session using that.

Keep in mind, my primary focus will be on the live session, so I can't guarantee the quality of the recording (and you know how fickle technology can be!).

Do you record sessions?

Biofeedback training for one. Also, hypnosis is an optional component of my one-on-one coaching for Stress Management and Transforming Emotional Eating programs.

Other than hypnosis, what services do you offer?
