What to Expect...
What is a session like?
At our first meeting, we'll spend some time talking about the goal you want to achieve or problem you want to resolve, what hypnosis is and is not, and what you can expect to experience. Then, if you choose to proceed, we'll conduct a hypnosis session.
Every Clinical Hypnotist has their own style. I believe in making the client an active part of the change process. I also believe that every client already holds the key to change within themselves.
A typical hypnosis session with me consists of breath-work, relaxation techniques, guided imagery, imagination exercises, and individualized positive suggestions. I'll give you reinforcement homework to do between sessions. Usually, I will also provide you with a recording of the session.
You remain in control at all times. I act as your facilitator, or guide, to help you achieve the change you are seeking.
Who uses hypnosis?
My clients come from all walks of life and include teachers, social workers, house painters, police officers, bus drivers, musicians, managers, small business owners, construction workers, nurses, writers, real estate agents, office workers, and retirees.
Can I be hypnotized?
Most people can be hypnotized for clinical purposes if they are comfortable with the hypnotist with whom they are working--and if they are willing to "let go" and participate in the process. (You can always analyze the process afterwards!)
You already enter some level of hypnosis several times a day. For example, you enter a light level of hypnosis when you're caught up in a good book or movie, or when you drive and reach your destination without being aware of the journey. (You may be familiar with the term "highway hypnosis.") You also enter this natural, altered state of mind when you're just about ready to drop off to sleep, and you're no longer really awake, but you're not yet asleep.
The difference between these spontaneous occurences of hypnosis and what happens in a session is that--in a session--we use breathwork and relaxation techniques to deliberately bring about that state of mind. Then, together, we engage your imagination and enlist the power of your subconsious mind to help you achieve the change you desire.
Will I lose control?
Absolutely not. You remain in control at all times. You can accept or reject anything you hear. You cannot be made (nor will I ask you!) to do anything against your will or in conflict with your value system. You will not unknowingly disclose secrets.
What does hypnosis feel like?
Everyone experiences hypnois a little differently. In fact, the same person will experience it a little differently from one session to another--and even a little differently from time to time within a single session. However, almost everyone reports feeling very relaxed and peaceful. Frequently they experience physical sensations such as a sense of lightness, heaviness, numbness, or tingling sensations.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions needed varies, depending on the issue and the wishes of the client. For general planning purposes, I recommend that you plan on four - six sessions. Keep in mind that this is something we will discuss during the first session and can modify as we go along.
Do you accept insurance?
I suggest you think of my services as something you will pay for personally. That will both protect your privacy and help you value the work you are doing more. In general, insurance companies do not like to cover hypnotic services, and I caution you not to expect them to do so.
